Phoenix
The Phoenix--does it really exist, or did it exist?
This bird burns itself into ash and is reborn after 500 years. It is popular among Egyptians; they believe it is a noble creature and it will stop all bad things from happening.
But this flaming bird doesn’t always show itself, some believe only a kind and person who needs help would be able to see it.
Think of it, how could a bird burn itself and come out unscathed, this can’t be true. But how could they imagine such things, they imagined so many legendary creatures…But none of them are real. I believe at least one of them is true, a real thing that exists.

May be phoenix have to suffer before death, so that they can have a new life. If they can't stand this kind of pain, they don't deserve to have new life again and again. Every living things suffer, phoenix shouldn't be an exception. So, it could be true that they did exist in the past but extinct for some reason...
If it does exist--or existed, where does it lives, cave or tree (but it burns tree)...? Where?
And does it have relatives?
Well, sometimes keeping something mysterious is good... But anyway, they could have live on trees and their flames actually won't burn anything except themselves... They make their nests and as you said, they don't always show itself, so they hide themselves somewhere in the tree or whatever...
Okay, but do you reckon the Phoenix has eggs, or it just exists and keep reborning?
But how comes the first Phoenix???
Well, phoenix can lay eggs AND reborn. Being able to reborn doesn't mean that phoenix couldn't lay eggs, right? And for the second question, if you are trying to combine science and myth, the first phoenix can be evolve from an ancient animal in the past, just like the mammals, the reptiles and others evolve from their ancestors. Is this explaination good enough? =P
Maybe phoenix is a animal then evolves to another type of animal--instead of evolved to mammals...
